“Oh mighty king! The sovereignty of the Vidyādharas,which was desired by the evil ShāntiShila, is now yours, once your life on this earth has come to an end. I have annoyed you a lot, but you kept your patience. I am pleased – ask me for any boon that you desire!”
त्वं चेत् प्रसन्नः को नाम न सिद्धो ऽभिमतो वरः ।
तथाप्य् अमोघवचनाद् इदं त्वत्तो ऽहम् अर्थये ॥ १२,३२.२३ ॥
आद्याः प्रश्नकथा एता नानाख्यानमनोरमाः ।
चतुर्विंशतिर् एषा च पञ्चविंशी समाप्तिगा ॥ १२,३२.२४ ॥
सर्वाः ख्याता भवन्त्व् एताः पूजनीयाश् च भूतले ।
इति तेनार्थितो राज्ञा वेतालो निजगाद सः ॥ १२,३२.२५ ॥
एवम् अस्तु विशेषं च शृणु वच्म्य् अत्र भूतले ।
याश् चतुर्विंशतिः पूर्वा यैषा चैका समापिनी ॥ १२,३२.२६ ॥
कथावलीयं वेतालपञ्चविंशतिकाख्यया ।
ख्याता जगति पूज्या च शिवा चैव भविष्यति ॥ १२,३२.२७ ॥
यः श्लोकमात्रम् अप्य् अस्याः कथयिष्यति सादरः ।
यो वा श्रोष्यति तौ सद्यो मुक्तपापौ भविष्यतः ॥ १२,३२.२८ ॥
यक्षवेतालकूष्माण्डडाकिनीराक्षसादयः ।
न तत्र प्रभविष्यन्ति यत्रैषा कीर्तयिष्यते ॥ १२,३२.२९ ॥
इत्य् उक्त्वा स ययौ तस्मान् निर्गत्य नृकलेवरात् ।
यथाभिरुचितं धाम वेतालो योगमायया ॥ १२,३२.३० ॥
King Vikram replied…
“That you are pleased with me is in itself the biggest boon that I could desire. However, I also know that your words should not be uttered in vain.”
“And so let these twenty-four questions and their answers, along with the stories that contain them, and the twenty-fifth story that you told me…may these be famous and praiseworthy!”
The Vetāla replied…
“Tathāstu! Listen o king! These stories, consisting of the twenty-four and the final one that I told you, shall become famous and honored around this earth.”
“Whosoever shall read with true devotion even one śloka from it, they will be freed from sins. No other power, be it the Yakṣas, and Vetālas, and Kuṣmāṇḍas, and witches, and Rākṣasas, shall have any power when these stories are recited!”
The Vetāla said this, and though yogmāya, came out of the corpse and went to swargā.
ततस् तत्र सुरैः सार्धं राज्ञस् तस्य महेश्वरः ।
साक्षाद् आविरभूत् तुष्टः प्रणतं चादिदेश तम् ॥ १२,३२.३१ ॥
साधु वत्स हतो ऽद्यायं यत् त्वया कूटतापसः ।
विद्याधरमहाचक्रवर्तिताहठकामुकः ॥ १२,३२.३२ ॥
त्वम् आदौ विक्रमादित्यः सृष्टो ऽभूः स्वांशतो मया ।
म्लेच्छरूपावतीर्णानाम् असुराणां प्रशान्तये ॥ १२,३२.३३ ॥
अद्य चोद्दामदुर्वृत्तदमनाय मया पुनः ।
त्वं त्रिविक्रमसेनाख्यो हीरः सृष्टो ऽत्र भूपतिः ॥ १२,३२.३४ ॥
अतः सद्वीपपातालां स्थापयित्वा महीं वशे ।
विद्याधराणम् अचिराद् अधिराजो भविष्यसि ॥ १२,३२.३५ ॥
भुक्त्वा दिव्यांश् चिरं भोगान् उद्विग्नः स्वेच्छयैव तान् ।
त्यक्त्वा ममैव सायुज्यम् अन्ते यास्यस्य् असंशयम् ॥ १२,३२.३६ ॥
अपराजितनामानं खड्गं चैतं गृहाण मे ।
यस्य प्रसादात् सर्वं त्वं प्राप्स्यस्य् एतद् यथोदितम् ॥ १२,३२.३७ ॥
इत्य् उक्त्वा खड्गरत्नं तद् दत्त्वा तस्मै महीभृते ।
वाक्पुष्पाभ्यर्चितस् तेन देवः शंभुस् तिरोदधे ॥ १२,३२.३८ ॥
Then Śiva, being pleased, appeared, accompanied by all the gods, to that king, visibly manifest, and said to him, as he bowed before him…
“Well done, o king! You have killed that deceitful man, who wanted to obtain sovereignty over all mankind through improper means.”
“You have been born out of me, as Vikramāditya, so that you may destroy the Asuras, that had become incarnate in the form of Mlecchas. You will rule the earth and the oceans, and soon shall be the supreme leader of the Vidyādharas. And long after you rule, and you take sanyāsa, you shall once again be absorbed in me.”
“Here – take this sword named Aparājita – the unconquerable. You will be able to accomplish whatever I told you, with the help of this sword.”
And Śiva gave him the sword, and then vanished.
अथ दृष्ट्वैव समाप्तं कार्यम् अशेषं निशि प्रभातायाम् ।
प्रविवेश स त्रिविक्रमसेनः स्वपुरं नृपः प्रतिष्ठानम् ॥ १२,३२.३९ ॥
तत्र क्रमावगतरात्रिविचेष्टिताभिर् अभ्यर्चितः प्रकृतिभिर् विततोत्सवाभिः ।
स्नानप्रदानगिरिशार्चननृत्तगीतवाद्यादिभिस् तद् अखिलं स दिनं निनाय ॥ १२,३२.४० ॥
अल्पैर् एव च वासरैः स नृपतिः शार्वस्य वीर्याद् असेः
सद्वीपां सरसा तलां च बुभुजे निःकण्टकां मेदिनीम् ।
संप्राप्याथ हराज्ञया सुमहतीं विद्याधराधीशतां
भुक्त्वा तां सुचिरं जगाम भगवत्सायुज्यम् अन्ते कृती ॥ १२,३२.४१ ॥
King Vikram then set out to his own city Pratiṣṭhāna. He was welcomed by his subjects, and he spent the whole day in giving charity and singing praises of Śiva. In a few days, he set out to accomplish what Śiva had destined for him, and soon King Vikram was the king of the earth. In due course, he became the sovereign of the Vidyādharas, and after a long and illustrious reign, he took up sanyāsa, and merged into Śiva, having achieved all his goals and desires.
