The beauty of a wandering mind…

A few (thankfully kind) comments on my post from yesterday.

Where do you find these words? Asked one. Well, I truthfully don’t know – rather, I don’t set out to find them. It’s more of an expression of what comes to mind, if I may put it that way.

Actually, as people, we have somehow forgotten this element of our personality – the free time/wandering mind bit. Every single moment, from the time we wake, till the time we sleep, is filled with so-called ‘productivity hacks’ and social media ‘rewards’ for work well done. We try to cram in a lot of work through multitasking, leading to poor efficiency and subsequent stress and tiredness, and then proceed to ‘reward’ ourselves with a break, which in most cases is a social media doom scroll.

This incidentally has two consequences – SM is known to cause reactions to extremities, which leads to even more stress, and we end up filling all our time leaving little space for wandering and boredom.

Oddly enough, it is during this boring time and time of doing nothing, when the best thoughts and ideas come about. The mind needs a bit of rest and tidying up everyday, and sleep, while it helps this process immensely, doesn’t have the pre-frontal cortex as an active participant. The daydreaming bit, which our teachers in school chided us for, is critical when it comes to this process. And so, every night, after dinner and before sleep, I allow myself to daydream a little, to let my mind wander, allowing thoughts to move around without getting too involved with them. The results are usually captured in the daily blog. Some blog entries are deliberate – the poetry is usually a product of the wandering mind:)

Try it sometime!
