Thank you Apple.
So here is what supposedly happened – one file in a kernel update was corrupted, and Windows crashed worldwide.
One file – thousands of computers affected, and as a result, disruptions across sectors – from airlines to banks and markets. From the USA to Australia. Reminds me of something in Hindi – ek macchar…(those who know…know).
But seriously, such incidents bring out our inherent vulnerabilities. What if a bad actor had caused this (doesn’t seem to be in this case though). What if a Government was able to do this at will (it can). We are all connected, and that’s a good thing, and now a bad thing. Such systemic issues can spread through our connected ecosystem in a matter of seconds, disrupting life as we know it.
Major governments worldwide need to address this issue. Every major Government should have its own tech stack, that is able to operate as backup should something like this occur again (and it will, this was a test run possibly). India for one can get this done, and fast. We are the world’s IT back office, aren’t we??
For now, we were unaffected, thanks to a lean guy in spectacles but one with a spectacular vision. He is no more but lives on through his products. And we at 10 Leaves, use them everyday.
Thank you Apple…
