Heeding his command, the asuras led by Chanda and Munda, launched an attack on the Devi. Some tried to bind her, others tried to wound her with their swords. The Devi cried out angrily, and in anger, her face turned as black as ink. Suddenly, the fearful Kāli, armed with a sword and a noose, emerged from the Devi’s forehead. Holding a strange skull- topped staff, decorated with a garland of skulls, clad in a tiger’s skin, looking menacing due to her emaciated body, with a gaping mouth and tongue hanging out, with deep-sunk reddish eyes, she filled the field with her roars.

Sandhi means Junction. Sandhikhan means time of 48 minutes, on which Sandhi Puja is performed to Devi Chamunda. Chamunda is a form of Devi Durga. Sandhikhan falls on the juncture of the 8th (Ashtami) and 9th (Navami) lunar days in waxing moon period of Ashwin Month. In the the 48 minutes, 24 minutes falls on the Ashtami and rest falls on the Navami.

An interesting piece of trivia. In ancient times, people used different types of methods in order to perform the Sandhi Puja on the exact time. Just before the last twenty-four minutes of the Ashtami puja, a bronze bowl with a tiny hole was placed in a bucket full of water. The bronze bowl was made in such a way that, after exactly 24 minutes, the bowl would submerge in the water. When the bowl was submerged in the water cannon balls were fired to announce the moment of Sandhi Puja. This method was very popular in many Rajbaris, or zamindaar houses in Bengal.

Today is Maha Ashtami, and I am on Nirjala Vrata since I woke up. Will break it only after the Sandhi Puja, which should finish around 8ish Dubai time. I did all my work as usual, went out a couple of times on errands, and didn’t sleep a wink. No exhaustion, no discomfort. It is all in the mind, after all!

Here is what I had written last year (in continuation with the series earlier)
