Learn, unlearn, repeat…again!

I had written this a little under a year back. The end of January – and we are already into the last fortnight of December. Time flies, and flies faster as you grow older.

Wait – that is actually true – research shows that time does indeed fly past faster as we grow in years. To be precise – the perception of time.

When we are children, things are slower – because all is new. We take our time to absorb, to understand, to discover. As you grow, a lot of that discovery changes to routine, and so the brain approximates the experience rather than go through the whole thing again and again. In short, time flies.

Unless of course, you have a learning mindset – then, a lot of that discovery returns, and keeps returning.

Here is the blog, which brings back a memory, and reinforces my belief in continuous learning. Have a read.

I wrote about learning yesterday, and amazing things started to happen already!

Early in the morning, I used AI to make an automated spreadsheet that tracks attendance easily – took me 3 minutes from start to finish, deployed immediately. As staff started to come in (virtually), threw the idea of forming a Coder Team with two positions pre-filled (me and one more) and put it out there that we had one more position to fill. All the candidate had to do was to wow us by building something using AI.

And guess what? Position got filled in 6 hours. A team member built an attendance app!

The world is changing in more ways that one can fathom:) Here are a few padas on the subject of learning…

अणुभ्यश्च महद्भ्यश्च शास्त्रेभ्यः कुशलो नरः।
सर्वतः सारमादद्यात् पुष्पेभ्य इव षट्पदः।।

Skilled people learn from every source, be it big or small, much like honey bees, who collect nectar from all types of flowers.

अन्नदानं परं दानं विद्यादानमतः परम् ।
अन्नेन क्षणिका तृप्ति र्यावज्जीवं च विद्यया ॥

Food is of great importance, but the knowledge that we acquire is even more important. While the food lasts for a short period of time, until we are hungry again, the skill and knowledge that we acquire feeds us for life.

विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्।
पात्रत्वात् धनमाप्नोति धनात् धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥

Knowledge makes one humble, humility leads to worthiness, worthiness creates wealth and enrichment, enrichment leads to right conduct, right conduct brings joy and contentment.

न चोर हार्यं न च राज हार्यं
न भ्रातृ भाज्यं न च भारकारि।
व्यये कृते वर्धत एव नित्यं
विद्याधनं सर्वधन प्रधानम्॥

Acquired knowledge cannot be stolen by anyone, nor can it be taxed, it cannot be divided among siblings, and it isn’t heavy to carry. The more time we spend in teaching others, the more we learn and knowledge increases. Knowledge is the most precious among all one’s possessions.

And the famed Feynman technique of THE Richard Feynman (Google him). Short version – TEACH. You will become a better learner:)

START TO LEARN…AND UNLEARN!
